On April 5th, 2023 celebrations were held in HORIBA offices across The Americas to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the company’s first official U.S. office and the founding of HORIBA Instruments, Inc.
HORIBA, headquartered in Japan, opened the first U.S. office in the early 1970s in Irvine, California. At that time, California was experiencing a smog crisis due to dangerous automotive exhaust emissions. The need to address the growing problem of urban pollution from vehicle tailpipes allowed the young company a chance to introduce its newly developed motor exhaust gas measurement equipment to a new market. In April 1973, HORIBA Instruments, Inc. opened for business—pioneering the path toward motor exhaust gas emissions control and the reduction of mobility’s carbon footprint.
While markets and technologies have changed, HORIBA’s commitment to providing authentic solutions that push the boundaries of science and technology has not waivered. To support mobility’s gradual shift from standard combustion engines to fully electrified solutions, HORIBA’s expertise, toolsets, and support services have evolved. The company now offers a full range of vehicle development solutions across propulsion methods, including the integration and optimization of electrified technologies such as fuel cells, electrolyzers, and batteries.
Founded in Kyoto, Japan in 1945 by Masao Horiba, HORIBA, Ltd. has grown to over 8,000 employees worldwide, implementing measurement technology-based solutions across automotive, medical, process and environment, scientific, and semiconductor industries. HORIBA Group offices and service centers now span 28 countries and regions, providing analytical and measurement solutions that contribute to global environmental conservation, safety and health, and the improvement of energy problems.
