HORIBA UK Limited announces that following the recent success of its inaugural CPD veterinary online meeting, it is to host another in its free to attend educational series. Entitled ‘In practice haematology – Beyond the pale!’ the webinar, providing practical insight on ensuring quality and best practice in veterinary haematology, will be presented by Ronnie Barron, University of Glasgow Veterinary School. Scheduled for Thursday 28th October, 19:30 BST.
As Laboratory Manager of the clinical pathology section of Veterinary Diagnostic Services at the University of Glasgow Veterinary School, Ronnie Barron has gained extensive experience in multi-species veterinary haematology. This experience has been built over many years of research support and interaction with clinicians within the vet school, as well as wider first opinion practice and CPD teaching of vets, nurses and technicians in the UK and abroad. He will share his broad practical knowledge of near patient testing in veterinary haematology, the effects of common and not so common pathologies, and the potential pitfalls to be aware of.
Ronnie Barron’s CPD presentation will prove valuable to many veterinary professionals as Haematology is a key diagnostic tool. It is used in many aspects of practice, including: establishing the 'normal' for any individual animal by the use of regular monitoring; as a pre-surgical check along with clotting and clinical chemistry testing; as a first line diagnostic tool at the initial presentation of new cases; and assessing response to treatment or monitoring a patient's recovery.
“We now have more near patient testing in veterinary haematology than ever before. Quality is key to best practice and ultimately superior patient care. Sod’s Law states that ‘if something can go wrong, it will!’, so along the way to your generating a Complete Blood Count, it pays to be aware of some of the pitfalls that you may encounter,” said Ronnie Barron. “One should never underestimate the value of gross exam and simple methods that can be used to ensure sample quality and results accuracy. Seeing is believing after all!”
During his presentation, Ronnie will look at QC and artefacts of sample quality and review the effects of different pathologies. By examining analyser output he will demonstrate how abnormalities of cells and plasma may affect measured parameters and their indices. Using images, photomicrographs and video links, he will move onto explain the techniques and equipment needed to complement analytical automation in order to confirm results quality. There will also be an open Q&A session with Ronnie after the presentation, so attendees are invited to bring any questions on all things haematology!
HORIBA’s team of veterinary specialists will also be available at the end of the webinar to discuss and advise on any user haematology requirements. As haematology testing specialists, HORIBA has a choice of highly accurate haematology solutions offering cost effective sampling with quick turnaround times to suit all needs. Its analysers are tried and trusted, have a small footprint and are easy to use and maintain, making them ideal for near patient testing in veterinary practice.
